battered by super storm sandy. the president traveled to hard hit areas on wednesday and today's meeting at the white house includes top aides, the head of fema and by the telephone, the governors of new york, new jersey and connecticut. and in this morning's weekly addressed. the president pledged to help storm victims to rebuild no matter how long it takes. >> as president, i promise them this, your country be there for you for as long as it takes to recover and rebuild. >> following this morning's meeting, they will fan out to tour damaged areas to make sure that necessary resources shall being provided. that includes gasoline because there's a shortage. and the long lines for gas still visible in some states. new jersey is actually rationing gas. >>> some people in new york cheered this morning when the lights came back on. the number of people without power drops from 2.6 million from a high of 8 million. the storm has left 175 people dead, including 106 in the united states. >>> new york marathon will not be run tomorrow. mayor bloomberg canceled that race after mounting criticism.

beach after superstorm sandy hit. about 145,000 customers in new york city still do not have power as of today, but that number is going dosays public transit is coming back but people have to allow extra time for travel this week. many schools will be back in session tomorrow, even though some classrooms still do not have heat. here's a look at how the salvation army is helping out those hardest hit by sandy. >> reporter: the salvation army says planning for the response to superstorm sandy started days before the wicked weather hit land. >> specifically, we had our disaster relief coordinator for the bay area deployed. >> reporter: spokesperson laney says that coordinator is currently in new jersey, districting food, water and providing shelter for those in need. >> it's providing care, providing a listening ear to those that maybe have lost their homes and can't find a family member. we provide someone to talk to and a listening ear, shoulder to cry on. >> reporter: on a daily basis, more than 100,000 people are receiving their meals from more than a dozen of these cantines, foo

are taking steps to make sure everyone can vote despite some challenges created by that storm sandy. both states are allowing people to cast ballots at any polling place. there are shuttling to get people to the polls. and ballots have been sent to emergency shelters. >> the weather is about to turn bad again in areas hit by sandy last week. a nor'easter is expected to hit new york and new jersey tomorrow. there could be heavy rain and winds gusting to 60 miles an hour. and that within a problem for crews trying to restore power to a million homes and businesses. and more flooding is likely along the coast. it's so heartbreaking to hear that because these guys need a break. >> lawrence has a little measure of good news because it looks like it might stay offshore a little bit? >> the core of the low may stay a little further off the coastline so hopefully they won't get hit with the brunt of the winds. but cold air will bring snow. so tough going on the eastern seaboard. out west, high pressure dominating our weather. mostly clear start although we are seeing some patchy fog in the north
